Municipality continues to dump waste near Chitlapakkam lake
Owing to the lockdown, residents near Chitlapakkam lake have stopped dumping waste near the water body. But the residents and activists are irked by the municipality still dumping mounds of garbage near the lake. Residents of the area said that the staff have covered the waste and plastic with mud and that is blocking the flow of water.

A portion of the lake is being used as a dumping ground for the wate collected from Chitlapakkam municipality. “After filing many complaints regarding the issue, the authorities cleared the waste. Still, a huge amount is buried in the area,” said Darwin Annadurai, an activist.
He pointed out that the area of the waterbody has been reduced due to this indiscriminate dumping. “If the solid waste is removed completely, the lake can be expanded like a few years ago. We have witnessed municipality vehicle dumping the waste,” said Darwin.
The residents said that Chiltapakkam panchayat doesn’t have a proper infrastructure to handle solid waste and thus they collect all kinds of waste together and dump it by the lake.
“The lake was cleaned a few months ago after filing frequent complaints. The officials should take an effort to find who is involved in dumping the waste here. The groundwater is already polluted and the government has not started the desilting work, which was expected to begin in 2020,” said Pandian, a resident of Chitlapakkam.
When contacted, a senior municipality official said, “We were clearing the waste from the lake and dumping the same at a composed yard at Korattur. But of late, we have not been able to clear it because of the lockdown. After lockdown, it would be cleared completely.”
