The accused, Ajmal Nizar Sharbudeen of MKB Nagar, targeted young widows on matrimonial sites and received money claiming to start a business, said the police. He was arrested following a complaint by one Abudhaheer of Tiruvottiyur stating that Ajmal Nizar cheated his daughter of 15 sovereigns and Rs 2.5 lakh.

Officials said Ajmal met the victim through the matrimonial site a few months ago. "Claiming that he runs a shop at Burma Bazaar, he received the woman's jewels on the pretext of expanding the business. He also made her transfer Rs 2.5 lakh to his Syndicate Bank account," said police.

However, as he delayed the wedding, the woman asked him to return her valuables. But Ajmal allegedly abused her over phone.

After the woman informed her father about it, Abudhaheer approached his friend for help and one Jaleel Rahman of Mannadi held talks with Ajmal. But he refused to return the jewels and cash, following which a complaint was lodged against Ajmal.

When the police checked Ajmal’s phone during investigation, they found photos of him with many women. Ajmal reportedly admitted that he would threaten the women to release their photos with him on social media if they demanded their valuables back or forces him to marry them. He was booked under Sections 406 (breach of trust) and 420 (forgery) of IPC, and was remanded in judicial custody on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the North Beach police also registered a case against Abudhaheer, the victim’s father, and Jaleel Rahman, who acted as a mediator, based on a complaint by Ajmal that their men kidnapped him from a lodge in Triplicane and attacked him after confining him in Jaleel Rahman's place in George Town, though he had promised to return the jewels and cash after the lockdown was lifted.
