S Saranya (34), mother of two children who are studying in Padmashree CBSE school in Korattur, submitted that the school has now commenced classes through online for the next academic year without abiding by any rules or framing of any regulation for conducting the classes. During the online session, several advertisements with explicit content were popping up, disturbing the student’s mind and lives, she alleged.

Also, pointing out that expanding online education would push those without access to the periphery of the education system and thus increase inequity in educational outcomes, the plea added that students claimed that they were going online for advanced courses for better prospects.

But they were targets to many online exploiters who are in a convenient position to derail their lives towards a darker path with no proper guidance or supervision.

The uncontrolled pop-ups during live sessions have forced several students to exit the class and watch explicit content on the internet.

Several parents have complained about this, the petitioner said, adding that it was a systematic exploitation of students’ minds.

Several hackers also exploit vulnerabilities in websites and spoil the young learning minds, the plea added, noting that some genuinely used it to advance their knowledge while most of them get distracted due to the vast exploration options of the internet.

The plea sought to forbear the authorities from conducting online classes without framing proper schemes and guidelines as prescribed under the Information Technology Act, 2000, so as to prevent children from accessing illegal and adult websites.
