Inaugurating a webinar on emerging trends in cyber crimes against women and children amidst COVID-19 lockdown and robust preventive mechanism, the DGP also highlighted the need for gender sensitising those working as a public interface at the control rooms and also those police personnel who make the first contact with the victims. “We are ready to impart training to such police personnel if needed,” he promised.

Delivering his welcome address, ADGP M Ravi, heading CWC unit, which organised the event along with Indian Police Foundation and International Justice Mission, said that violence against women is a manifestation of historical inequality. He also noted that unless there is an inclusive approach, the elimination of crime against women may not be possible.

Ravi also noted that a large majority of crimes against women and children are committed by people whom they know. He went on to wonder if there is something wrong with the society we live in or if there is a mistake in the upbringing of children in our society. “Children should be taught at the young age against gender discrimination,” he added.

Dr PM Nair, a retired IPS officer and an UN-recognised human trafficking expert advised the police officials to reach out to the victims of physical exploitation, slavery and servitude. “Human trafficking should be treated as a basket of crimes which can be booked under so many sections of IPC,” he noted.

V Balakrishnan DIG, Tiruchy range, in his web meet talk, noted the need to phoning up and talking to victims as follow up action, interacting with women at migrant settlements, women living on pavements, besides those lodged in orphanages, and sexually exploited women and transgenders.
