Civic body increases number of containment zones to 360
With the number of positive cases in the city increasing, the Greater Chennai Corporation has increased the number of containment zones, too.
Chennai
According to the Chennai Corporation, there are as many as 360 containment zones in the city as on Thursday. However, most of the 360 containment zones are individual houses or buildings as the civic body had already decided to lock only the infected households instead of sealing the entire street.
Earlier, the civic body had notified only 202 streets as containment zones. A few weeks ago, there were around 1,300 containment zones in the city. Several streets were released as containment period was reduced to 14 days from 28 days.
If new cases are not reported in containment zones, the restrictions would be lifted.
Among the zones, Royapuram zone, where more than 4,000 cases have been reported, has 78 containment zones. Kodambakkam zone has 73 containment zones, whereas Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and Perungudi have 54 and 28 containment zones respectively.
On the other hand, there is not a single containment zone in Anna Nagar and Valasaravakkam has only one containment zone.
