    Joint Commissioner, inspectors add to cops’ COVID count

    Raising concerns about the risks faced by the police personnel while being in the frontline of the battle against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, a Joint Commissioner and two inspectors in the city police tested positive on Saturday.

    According to officials, the woman officer who is the Joint Commissioner (South), was present at the cremation of inspector S Balamurali, the first COVID-19 fatality among the police officials in Tamil Nadu who died at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. After she developed symptoms, the officer subjected herself of COVID-19 test. The results declared on Saturday confirmed that she had contracted the virus. She has now been admitted to a private hospital in Porur.

    Besides her, the inspectors of Royapuram and Saidapet, too, tested positive to Covid-19 on Saturday, and have been admitted to different hospitals. The Royapuram inspector had been on the rounds in his jurisdiction, the worst affected among the 15 city Corporation zones.

    With these, the total number of police personnel to be affected by the virus in the city stands at 805 till Saturday.

    Meanwhile, three personnel of Tondiarpet police station – SSI Vishnu, SSI Ezhumalai and Grade I constable Lala Balaji – returned to duty and were were welcomed by Washermenpet Deputy Commissioner Subbulakshmi, Assistant Commissioner Julies Ceaser (who had returned to duty only recently) and inspector Deivendran.
