A division bench comprising Justice R Subbiah and Justice Krishnan Ramasamy sought for the report in two weeks while admitting a PIL moved by R Varaki seeking a direction to the State to provide adequate PPEs, face masks, hand gloves and sanitisers to police and Jail personnel.

When the plea came up for hearing, government pleader V Jayaprakash Narayan submitted that though all personnel were not entitled for PPE, the government was providing protective gear like facemasks, gloves and sanitisers to all police and prison personnel.

The petitioner had contended that police and prison officials were working day and night on COVID duty but no adequate protection measures were taken to safeguard them from the infection.

This has led to the situation where the personnel were getting infected every day. He added that if proper measures were not taken to protect such personnel from the viral infection, it would affect the very object of the intense lockdown that has affected the livelihood of thousands of people.
