    ‘Positive’ news: Recovery rate inching towards 60 per cent in city

    Amid the grim situation where the number of COVID-19 cases in Chennai crossed 50,000 and deaths too increasing every day, the recovery rate in the city has also registered a rising trend for nearly three weeks, signalling a much-needed improvement.

    The data from the Greater Chennai Corporation shows that the recovery rate in the city touched 58.48 per cent on Friday from 49.13 per cent as on June 8 – registering a rise in recovery rate by nearly 10 per cent points. The rise in recovery rate has been steady: the recovery rate was 51.46 per cent on June 12, which crossed 55 per cent on June 19.

    The total number of positive cases as on Friday was 49,690, of which 28,823 patients have recovered. However, 730 persons died due to COVID-19, which is 1.49 per cent.

    The data also revealed that the Royapuram zone, the worst hit zone among the 15 zones, has a higher number of recovered persons when compared to other zones. As many as 4,405 persons have recovered and 2,683 persons are currently under treatment. Tondiarpet, Teynampet and Kodambakkam zones have 3,688, 3,461 and 3,265 recovered persons respectively.

    Proportionate with the higher number of infected persons and recovered persons, the highest number of deaths, too, are reported from Royapuram zone. Till Friday morning, 123 persons had died in the zone. Teynampet zone also registered more than 100 deaths with 108 deaths as on Friday.

    Aiming to reduce the caseload in government hospitals and to ensure timely treatment, the Chennai Corporation is operating COVID care centres to treat asymptomatic patients. “We have cured around 250 patients at the COVID care centres by using Siddha medicines. For the persons tested positive now under home quarantine, we have appointed volunteers to help them with essential items,” said a Corporation official.
