Corpn readies 33,904 beds for asymptomatic patients
Gearing up to deal with any surge in COVID-19 cases, the Greater Chennai Corporation has arranged 33,904 beds at COVID care centres. This is excluding the beds available in government and private hospitals in the city. This is much higher than the active cases in the city (around 20,000).

According to Chennai Corporation data, 14,406 beds are provided at COVID care centres set up at 53 institutions. Apart from these, 2,479 beds are ready at the schools run by the Corporation and another 600 beds at a nursing college outside the Corporation.
Sources said the civic body is also mulling to take over unused multistory buildings that were built by violating construction rules, to convert them as quarantine centres.
“In addition to the institutional COVID care centres, 4,200 beds are ready at Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) apartments in Ambattur zone. Also, 1,300 beds are provided in Chennai Corporation Community centres. Overall, we have arranged 33,904 beds across the city,” an official said.
The civic body is sending asymptomatic patients and persons with mild symptoms to COVID care centres where they are kept under quarantine for 14 days.
“Around 30 per cent of positive persons are in the COVID care centres, while the rest are in hospitals or under home quarantine. Close to 5,000 beds in the COVID care centres are now occupied and remaining are vacant, which would be used in case of huge spread,” the official added.
Among the zones, Adyar has the highest number of COVID care beds as the zone houses several institutions like Anna University and IIT-Madras. Adyar has 2,970 beds in seven centres. There are eight COVID care centres in Sholinganallur zone, which have 1,825 beds.
Two new zonal officers appointed
CHENNAI: State Chief Secretary K Shanmugam appointed new zonal officers for Kodambakkam and Anna Nagar zones in the Greater Chennai Corporation.
According to an order dated June 27, TP Jai Beam, who is the general manager of Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the zonal officer of Kodambakkam zone. Similarly, BM Senthil Kumar, who is the district revenue officer in Anna Institute of Management, has been appointed as the zonal officer of Anna Nagar zone. Both the new zonal officers are appointed on deputation.
Already, the government had appointed new zonal officers for Royapuram and a few other zones at a time when the civic body is fighting COVID-19.
