I was confident he would come back: Inspector Balamurali’s wife

Inspector Balamurali was the first police officer to succumb to COVID in the State, which came as a shock to the entire police department since he was only 47 and did not have any major health issues. It was because of the same factors that his wife Kavitha was confident that he would recover soon and come back home.

“Along with him, Our children and I were also tested positive. We were home-quarantined and he was asked to stay at the IIT-Madras facility since he had caught a cold. Two days later, he was shifted to Omandurar Government Hospital, after which he was referred to RGGGH for better attention. But, I was told that his condition was critical. When I visited the hospital on June 16, I was told that his lungs was affected and the next day he developed complications,” says Kavitha, breaking down in between.

Though she said senior police officials took utmost care of him, she could not help but think she might have taken better care of him. Ever since lockdown came into effect, Balamurali was concerned about the families of people of dying of COVID. “He was worried about the future of the family. So, he could not believe it when he contracted COVID and was upset that we all tested positive,” she said.

Kavitha said everyone be it in his workplace or family liked him for the person he is and added she will never be able to come to terms with his demise.
