The deceased M Prithviraj (34) of Perumal Koil Street in Maduravoyal worked as a lathe workshop in Padi. He got married to one Sathya and the couple has a six-year-old son. While the couple legally divorced two years ago, Prithviraj’s parents decided to get him married to another woman.
Sathya’s brothers Dhamu and Ilaiyaraaja, who came to know about Prithviraj’s decision, reached their house with a few others on Monday night and attacked him before kidnapping him in a car. After Prithviraj’s parents lodged a complaint, Maduravoyal police registered a case and were searching for him when Prithviraj himself reached his residence on Tuesday night.
However, on Wednesday morning, Prithviraj doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire inside the house. Though he was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, Prithiviraj died without responding to treatment on Wednesday evening. In his dying declaration, Prithviraj told police that he was kidnapped to a village near Mamallapuram where he was forced to tie mangal sutra to his ex-wife Sathya again in a temple and made to stay with her in a house in Pattukkulam village. Prithviraj escaped from the house and managed to reach Maduravoyal. However, distressed over the entire episode, Prithviraj was sleepless on Tuesday night and attempted self-immolation on Wednesday.
Maduravoyal police said the entire family of the accused is on the run.
