Sharing stories: COVID survivors find solace in support group
After four days of fever and body pain, Premkumar Karra and his wife decided to get themselves tested for COVID-19. The couple, who tested positive, recovered on June 1 and was discharged. But they admitted that they needed a place to share their experiences, which was when they joined a support group for COVID-19 survivors.

Started by the Bhoomika Trust two weeks ago, the public group, which is hosted on the Telegram app, is open to COVID-19 survivors and those currently fighting the disease, as well as their family members and loved ones. The group is also open to those interested in reading about survivor’s accounts for the same.
“Most recovering from or fighting the disease are alone during this time, as even family cannot see them. This makes them feel very isolated, and in some cases, a few have gone into depression. This was started as a platform for them to share their stories and find companionship,” said Jayendra Panchapakesan, founder-trustee, Bhoomika Trust.
According to Ramesh Vinayakam, a music director, this was an opportunity to dispel fears surrounding the disease and rid away any stigma associated with it. “I never wanted to publicise my infection as it is a personal thing to be dealt with, but I want to help people by sharing my experience. The Telegram group helps people deal with the mental and physical difficulties they face, and makes them feel strong enough to fight it,” he said.
Through sharing and hearing others’ experiences, Premkumar feels that the stigma associated with the disease will slowly disperse. “Stigma is a horrible thing. It is wrong. This is an infection, just like any other. I was lucky as my neighbours were doctors, but others are not so lucky. It is important that people hear our stories to debunk these ideas, and approach the disease without fear,” he said.
The Telegram group is open to the public to join and is moderated by Bhoomika Trust volunteers.
