Based on the information provided by Sai Vignesh of Almighty Animal Care Trust, Police Superintendent Aravindhan sent a special team to Uthukottai. However, knowing that police are arriving, the couple shifted the cow to interiors and slaughtered it.Police seized the meat and secured the couple identified as Raghu and Sarala. They were booked under Sections 188, 270, 273 of IPC and Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act by Pullarambakkam police and were released on bail.

Sai Vignesh, when contacted, said they have rescued more than 10 cows from being slaughtered in different parts of Tiruvallur district. “There are several guidelines for slaughterhouses and bulls and buffaloes of a certain age are only permitted for slaughter. While slaughtering cows and calves for meat is banned, people kill young cows and calves for meat,” said Sai Vignesh.

According to him, there is a huge demand for the meat of unborn calves which thrives the slaughtering of pregnant cows. “The guidelines are flouted while slaughtering animals at illegal abattoirs and chemicals are mixed in the meat which poses a health hazard to consumers,” he said.
