Man sells stolen jewels to buy gift for lover, CCTV gives him away

A special team was formed after several vehicle thefts and burglaries were reported in Triplicane police district and CCTV footage in connection with a burglary case, reported by one Syed Abith Rasa in Thousand Lights on July 27, was combed when a suspect was seen conversing with another man in Triplicane. The latter was secured and based on his inputs, the suspect, identified as Mehanathan, was secured.

The investigation by inspector Chandramohan and team revealed that he burgled five sovereigns from a house and sold them at a jewellery shop in T Nagar. “Then he went to another jewellery shop in T Nagar for purchase. There is CCTV evidence for everything,” said an official.

Police said Mehanathan left his wife and children in Vyasarpadi citing lockdown and indulged in thefts. Mehanathan is said to have bought a pair of earrings for his girlfriend with the money and it has been seized.
