In a move to decongest the overcrowded Koyambedu wholesale market, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has plans to construct three new wholesale markets in the outskirts of the city.

According to planning authority documents, new wholesale markets would come at Mathur, Kuthambakkam and Kattankolathur or Potheri. The CMDA has also invited consultants to prepare a feasibility report and detailed project report for the construction of the new markets.
“Koyambedu market is the only source market for vegetables and fruits in the city. The market is now overcrowded due to wholesale and retailing. As the market was established 25 years ago, the facility is inadequate to meet present requirements,” an official said.
Moreover, more than 50,000 persons, including traders, visit the Koyambedu market every day, resulting in the choking of roads with traffic congestion and overcrowding in and around the market area.
After the COVID-19 outbreak in the city, Koyambedu market had become a headline as more than 4,000 persons, including shop owners and workers, got infected and spread the virus to several parts of the State. This had forced the government to shift the market temporarily to Thirumazhisai.
“The number of shops and other facilities in the new wholesale markets will be decided after the detailed project report prepared. Also, shop allotment methodology will be discussed and finalised in future,” the official added.
It may be noted that the Koyambedu Wholesale Market was constructed to de-congest Kothaval Chavadi market that acted a main market for the city.
