The announcement on constructing the two flyovers was made way back in 2011-2012, and works had commenced about six years ago. However, problems over land acquisition delayed the works, said the CM.

“When I was the Highways Minister in 2011, I brought to the attention of then chief minister J Jayalalithaa the proposal to construct a flyover at Kelambakkam junction to reduce traffic. Jayalalithaa announced the decision to construct it at Vandalur-Kelambakkam junction. Now the works have been completed and the bridge is open,” said Palaniswami.

While the flyover at Pallavaram cost Rs 80.74 crore, the one at Vandalur was built at a cost of Rs 55 crore. “Traffic congestion will be reduced to a great deal, which will ensure safe travel,” he added.

The Chief Minister said 75 per cent work on the flyover at Koyambedu has been completed. The Rs 93.5 crore flyover would be completed by end-December, he said. Similarly, 85 per cent works on the Rs 146.41 crore Medavakkam flyover was complete, he said. The right arm of the flyover from Velachery to Tambaram would be opened by December.

The Rs 64 crore Keelkattalai flyover was 82 per cent complete. Its left arm would be inaugurated by December and the whole bridge would be open to the public from January, said Palaniswami. The right arm of the Rs 41 crore Kolathur flyover was 90 per cent over and would be completed by October. The left arm was already opened. Palaniswami said the Rs 21.96 crore Korattur subway would be completed this month.
