Man detained under Pocso Act claims poisoning self at court
Tension prevailed on the premises of Mahila Court in Tiruvallur on Wednesday morning after a 20-year-old man, arrested under Pocso Act for eloping with a minor girl on the promise of marriage and sexually assaulted her, claimed to have consumed rat poison along with the girl when they were about to be produced before the magistrate.

While the girl, a Class 12 girl, went missing in September, her parents lodged a complaint at Tirumullaivoyal police station and a case was registered. Later, they filed a habeas corpus petition at the Madras High Court and based on court directive, police secured the girl and Srinivasan (20) from Ambattur. Since he had allegedly sexually exploited her on the promise of marriage, he was booked under Pocso Act.
After the couple claimed that they had consumed rat poison, they were rushed to Tiruvallur Government Hospital. However, doctors failed to find any trace of poison in their body.
Police said the girl will be sent to a government home since her parents did not want her anymore and the accused will be remanded after getting discharged from the hospital.
Meanwhile, Muthialpet all-women police arrested a 25-year-old man for sexual assault on an 11-year-old girl in the locality.
