Chennai to see dry spell for 48 hours before rain resumes
Following two days of heavy rain, Chennai is expected to receive light to no rainfall over the next 48 hours, said weather experts. However, this is a mere lull in the north-east monsoon rain. Moderate rainfall is expected to follow a week after.

“Thursday’s cyclonic circulation, over north Tamil Nadu and south Coastal Andhra Pradesh coasts and neighbouring areas, now lies over Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and extends upto 4.5 km above mean sea level,” said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.
Heavy rainfall is expected at Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts. Meanwhile, south Tamil Nadu and isolated areas of north Tamil Nadu are expected to receive light to moderate rains with a possibility of thunderstorms over the next 48 hours.
Chennai, however, will experience a dry spell for the next few days, said Pradeep John, a weather blogger who runs the Facebook page Tamil Nadu Weatherman. “The very active phase of monsoon is yet to begin. When Madden–Julian oscillation comes in, we are in for a treat. Thursday’s massive rains was just a bonus. Models continues to be very consistent on very good days in November and December,” he said.
In Chennai and the surrounding areas, the expected temperatures are between 32 degrees and 26 degrees Celsius, and sky conditions are expected to be partly cloudy over the next 48 hours. Light rains are expected in some parts of the city and surrounding areas.
