In October alone, sleuths from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) have carried out pre-festival surprise checks on 35 premises of State government officials and unearthed a total of Rs 4.12 crore in unaccounted cash. According to DVAC officials, the figure is one of the biggest in the recent history of the Vigilance raids.

For the DVAC team, it was the raid on the office and house of M Panneerselvam, zonal officer of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Vellore that yielded best of results. The sleuths had unearthed Rs 3.25 crore in cash and 450 sovereigns of gold from his house and another Rs 33.73 lakh in cash from his office.

Then came the house and office of Balamurgan, sub-registrar, Palanganathan from where the investigators seized Rs 4.09 lakh and Rs 2.19 lakh respectively.

Next best came when the sleuths raided the premises of A Perumal, joint director, Geology and Mining, Dindigul. The DVAC team recovered a total of Rs 5.1 lakh when they searched his house and office.

The surprise checks started on October 1 at Sriperumbudur RTO, which resulted in a seizure of Rs 3.84 lakh unaccounted cash. During the course of the month, the Vigilance team raided four RTO offices, generally believed to be hubs of corruption.

Another nerve centre of illicit money transaction with which government officials are ‘greatly benefited’ are the offices of sub-registrars.

During October, a total of 13 sub-registrar offices were raided by the DVAC teams and a total of Rs 16.48 lakh was seized.

Interestingly at Virudhunagar, the Vigilance teams found Rs 2.26 lakh unaccounted cash in the office of the assistant director, rural development while a search at the house of his driver resulted in the recovery of Rs 2.9 lakh in cash.
