Veggie prices continue to rise due to disparity in supply and demand
Prices of vegetables have risen due to supply issues caused by the heavy rain that lashed the region. The prices will stay at a 10 per cent increase in at least one week, vendors speculated.
Chennai
Following a massive rise last week, onion prices have stabilised this week, owing to regular shipments from Egypt.
“There will be a 10 per cent increase in vegetable prices this week, and based on the monsoon, it could spike again the week after that. There will be no dip in prices henceforth, only an increase or stable prices,” said P Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Vegetable Merchant’s Association.
The price of beans per kg is expected to be Rs 50 per kg this week. Price of brinjal is expected to rise to Rs 50 this week. Carrots are in the range of Rs 70 to Rs 90 per kg, and tomatoes are at Rs 40 per kg. Price of small onion is still high at Rs 90 to 100 per kg, but vendors say that onion price might increase over the week.
“We are expecting onion prices to go up because of the rain and supply issues. It is selling between Rs 70 and Rs 80 per kg this week, but it might increase to Rs 100 in the upcoming week,” said a vendor at Koyambedu.
