    Weathermen predict dry Deepavali in Chennai

    After mild to moderate spells in several districts on Friday, a low-intensity trough over southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu coast is likely to bring showers to many parts of the State in the next 48 hours.

    However, the city is likely to witness a dry Deepavali, as rains are predicted only a couple of days later in the region comprising Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur.

    According to the forecast by the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, thunderstorm with heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Salem and Namakkal districts in next 48 hours.

    The northeast monsoon will bring heavy to moderate showers in the coming days and the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy in Chennai. The city might experience light to moderate rainfall in some areas, and maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be 31 degree Celsius and 25 degree Celsius respectively on Saturday.

    The figures released by Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority showed that Mylapore taluk received 56.8 mm, the maximum rain in the city as of 6 am on Friday, followed by Guindy (46.8 mm), Perambur and Ayanavaram (43 mm).

    On Friday, Nungambakkam recorded maximum temperature of 31.3 degree Celsius and minimum temperature of 25.2 degree Celsius, while Meenambakkam recorded maximum temperature of 31.1 degree Celsius and minimum temperature of 24.2 degree Celsius.

    Meanwhile, weather blogger Pradeep John said Deepavali day might start with some moderate rains in the morning in Chennai. However, the sky will be clear later in the day. Heavy rains are expected on Sunday and Monday, he added.
