Low pressure deepens, Met warns of rain, wind and waves in TN, Pondy

Southern parts of the State, including Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, and also Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu in the city’s neighbourhood are likely to receive heavy rains on Tuesday and Wednesday, said Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA).

“The low-pressure area over south Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of Southeast Bay of Bengal and Equatorial Indian Ocean has organised into a well-marked low-pressure area. It is very likely to concentrate into a depression over the next 24 hours and intensify further thereafter. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and reach near south Tamil Nadu coast around December 2,” said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

This could bring heavy rainfall to Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari on Tuesday. Thunderstorms are also expected in isolated areas across the State.

A warning has been issued for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and those out for fishing to return. Wind speeds between 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, is expected in southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin. A warning has been issued for these areas as well as the southwest Arabian Sea, areas surrounding the Maldives and Lakshadweep islands.

The coast of north Tamil Nadu from Point Calimer to Pulicat are likely to witness high waves with a range of 1.7 metres to 3.4 metres till November 30, the weather experts added.

Meanwhile, Chennai is likely to have partly cloudy skies with isolated cases of light rain over the next 48 hours. Temperatures are predicted to stay between 31 degree Celsius and 23 degree Celsius.
