Corpn to clear 3 decades of garbage from Perungudi, reclaim marshland

According to a Corporation official, the dump yard is spread over 200 acres and it has been so for more than 30 years. “The project has been designed to reclaim the marshland. There will be no construction activity taken up at the site once reclamation works are completed,” the official said.

The official added that the dumping of garbage at Perungudi landfill would be stopped as the civic body is implementing a slew of waste processing projects. The civic body has segregated the bio-mining project into three packages and floated tenders separately for each package. As per the estimates, the civic body would spend more than Rs 1,500 crore for the project and the works would be completed in four years.

“Under the project, we will clear the waste that has been dumped over three decades. Once the project is completed, the land would slowly attain its marshland quality,” the official said.

The Corporation has already started bio-mining in erstwhile dumping sites near Pallikaranai, Sathangadu and Athipattu.

The bio-mining process involves segregation of organic and inorganic waste, which would be converted into manure or other products. Presently, the civic body sends around 2,400 tonnes of garbage every day to Perungudi landfill.
