Use own resources to re-lay rain-battered roads immediately, activists tell TN govt
Activists have urged the State government to re-lay the rain-battered roads on a war footing by the Highways department without waiting for awarding of contracts through the tendering process.
Chennai
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Public Environment and Awareness Society president S Yuvaraj said the roads would get damaged due to rain and poor quality of laying the roads. “The city Corporation and the Highways department used to repair the pothole-ridden roads on their own but has now decided to award contracts for such works,” Yuvaraj said.
Pointing out that re-laying of the roads directly by the department concerned may not be beneficial for the officials, he alleged that the officials are more interested in giving contracts as they often get a commission from the contractors.
He also charged that the corporation, which owns a concrete mixture plant near Nehru Park on EVR Periyar Salai, was not using the facility for the road re-laying work for the past four years even though workers were being paid salary every month.
“Due to delay in re-laying of the rain-battered roads more road accidents are happening daily. The government should immediately take steps to repair the damaged roads using its own resources and manpower. It will help reduce road accident fatalities,” he said.
