According to a Chennai Corporation statement, the civic body has identified 23 areas which were inundated due to heavy rain due to Cyclones Nivar and Burevi.

“During the last two years, the number of spots with waterlogging has come down to nine, owing to several measures taken by the civic body. However, due to the heavy rains during cyclones, 23 spots were waterlogged,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the civic body held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the measures to be taken at those 23 locations and decide on the improvement works.

During the meeting, Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash instructed the engineers to conduct a detailed study at the spots.

“The engineers have also been instructed to study the 73 streets where new drains would be constructed. The engineers will survey the streets and construct the new stormwater drains,” an official said.

Also, engineers have been asked to repair the roads were damaged during the monsoon.

The civic body had proposed to construct flood canals in three spots in South Chennai zones to carry flood water from Pallikaranai marshland to Buckingham Canal.

The civic body had said that the rainwater from southern suburban areas flowed into the areas around Pallikaranai, causing floods in Velachery, Perungudi, Perumbakkam, Sholinganallur and other areas.
