Tamil Nadu CBCID Begins Investigation Into 104 Kg Missing Gold Case

The Tamil Nadu CBCID has started its probe into the case of the 104 kg gold which went missing from the CBI custody. This comes two weeks after the Madras High Court asked the state agency to investigate the incident.

The case — being probed by a special team headed by an officer in the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP)  — was registered under Section 380 (night burglary) of IPC, based on the complaint of the insolvency professional liquidator Ramasubramanian. The high court has directed a CB-CID probe by an officer in the SP rank to be completed in six months, after reviewing the hearing.

The missing gold is part of the 400.5 kg gold bars seized by the CBI in 2012 when it was raided at Surana Corporation Limited in Chennai. Later, the CBI officials kept the gold in the safes and vaults of Surana under the CBI’s lock and seal.The CBI officials claimed that they had handed over the keys of the safes and vaults to the Chennai principal special court for CBI cases. Later, when the gold bars were weighed while handing over to the liquidator — appointed for a settlement of debts between Surana and the SBI — 104 kg gold was missing.

The CBI has been carrying out an internal inquiry and has already questioned two retired Tamil Nadu police officials who had worked with the CBI when this case was being handled.
