‘Theatres offer an experience that cannot be replaced by OTT’

With a steep rise in the consumption of cinema and other content over OTT platforms, the theatres offer an experience that has no alternative. Theatres are getting back to the normal crowd with several blockbusters being released recently, claimed theatre owners, discussing the challenges and revival post-pandemic at the CII Dakshin South India Media - Entertainment Summit on Sunday.

CHENNAI: “We have an experience that the OTT and small screens cannot offer. The experience that the theatres offer along with the seating, right visuals and right sound is not available within the comfort of your home. It is so much more than a large screen. People are coming out of homes for this experience,” said Vishal Sawhney, Chief Executive Officer at Carnival Multiplexes.

Nikilesh Surya, Director of Operations at Rohini Groups said the demand for movie releases in theatres is continuing, despite the competition from the OTT platforms. “The recent movie releases kept the cinema theatres full and we are going to see more of that in future,” he said.

Meanwhile, the acceptance of regional language cinema has brought a new trend to the cinema industry. “The movies in other regional languages are finding acceptance and getting very good response in theatres. For example, RRR, Pushpa and KGF have had a good response in Chennai. After the pandemic, people are also looking for an experience that offers a feel-good content,” said Rakesh Gowthaman, proprietor of Vettri Theatres.
