CHENNAI: Residents of New Kanniamman Nagar, located about 12 km from Avadi, are irked by the Tasmac shop situated near a bus stand in the region. With women and school going children commuting every day, they claim the presence of Tasmac close to the bus stand has been causing public nuisance.

Residents further alleged that though two years back grama sabha assured to shift the shop to Pattabiram and it has so far not materialised.

Speaking to DT Next, resident of Kanniamman Nagar and member of Penn Thozhilalargal Sangam said, "The liquor shop opens earlier than its scheduled time. At about 7 am every morning, we can witness men in inebriated condition walking out of Tasmac."

She further went on to add that as inebriated men are often found lying unconscious at the bus stand nearby. School going children, especially girls, fear to wait for the bus, she added.

"There have been several instances of drunk men lying undressed at the bus stop. Additionally, many men in inebriated condition create tantrums such as deliberately walking in front of the bus,” the resident said.

K Rajeshwari, another resident of Kanniamman Nagar said this has been the condition for the past eight years. And, despite repeated requests at grama sabha, no action was taken.

"After we complained about the ordeal at a grama sabha meeting two years ago, the local body officials assured us to shift the TASMAC to Pattabiram. But that promise is yet to be fulfilled,” said Rajeshwari.

Meanwhile, commenting on this, a local body official on the condition of anonymity said, "We do not have any update about shifting the Tasmac shop yet. The concerned department was initiating works through grama sabha, but it was delayed due to pandemic. However, we will swiftly initiate action."
