Customs officials seize gold worth Rs 89.11 lakhs at Chennai airport

CHENNAI: Customs officials seized 1.989 kg of gold worth Rs 89.11 lakhs at Chennai airport.

During the rummaging of Indigo Airlines that arrived from Dubai at Chennai International Airport on Wednesday, the staff found gold in paste form concealed behind the tissue tray in the toilet of the aircraft. The customs found gold weighing 740 grams valued at Rs 33.15 lakhs was recovered and seized under the Customs Act, 1962.

In another incident, Customs Officers intercepted one male passenger, Asback Hasan of Indian nationality who arrived from Dubai. During a personal search, the customs found gold in paste form concealed in his rectum and one gold chain concealed in his undergarments. Totally 1.249 kgs of gold valued at Rs 55.96 lakhs. Further investigations are under progress.
