CHENNAI: PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday urged the state government to close down the pits dug for placing storm water drainage pipes in Chennai.

"To place storm water drainage pipes, pits were dug in several areas in Chennai but works have been carried out for several weeks. The Greater Chennai Corporation is so careless that the rain water and the drainage water have started accumulating in the pits.

The pits located near schools, hospitals and residential complexes have turned into mosquito breeding centres and the they have resulted in spreading diseases. It cannot be refused that the pits are also the reason for the recent spread of fever among school students in Chennai, " said Anbumani, in a series of tweets.

The Corporation is involved in laying storm water drainage pipes to prevent flooding during the northeast monsoon season and the state government had planned to complete the works before the onset of monsoon, by the third week of October. However, works in several areas have not been completed as planned.

Anbumani urged the Corporation officials to complete the storm water drainage works at the earliest or to close the pits wherever work could not be completed on time. By doing this, the Corporation can prevent the spread of diseases, he said.
