    Corporation Council restores woman councillor

    On Thursday council meeting, a resolution was tabled to restore her post and the same proposal was adopted and resolved by the Corporation council.

    CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation council has restored a councillor, who had failed to attend three council meetings consecutively.

    U Mallika, councillor of ward 118, failed to participate in council meetings held in June, July and August. As per the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act (CCMC) 1919, a councillor will cease to hold office, if he or she fails to attend the council meetings for a period of three consecutive months.

    Meanwhile, Mallika, through an e-mail, clarified that she went to the USA as to tend to her only daughter, who was injured in an accident. She claimed that she was in contact with the public through WhatsApp and e-mail to resolve public issues. She also requested the council to restore her post and help her in resolving civic issues in the ward.

    Citing a section in the CCMC Act, that says "in the case of a person who has ceased to be a councillor in consequence of failure to attend meeting, the matter shall be reported by the commissioner at the next ordinary meeting and the council may at that meeting restore such person to office".
