CHENNAI: A 20-year-old college girl was killed after she was pushed in front of a moving train by a 31-year-old man, whose propoal she refused to entertain, on Thursday at St Thomas Mount Railway station in Chennai.
Police said the deceased was Sathya of St Thomas Mount and was studying Bcom second year at a private college in T Nagar. Her father is Manikkam (47) and mother Ramalakshmi (43) is a head constable at the Adambakkam police station.
Police said Sathish (31) of Adambakkam was in love with Sathya and expressed his interest many times, but Sathya was not interested in him and would avoid talking with him.
Since Sathish was torturing her regularly, the parents filed a complaint at the Mambalam police station a few weeks ago. On Thursday, around 1.15 pm, when Sathya was waiting at the St Thomas Mount railway station to board the EMU to her college, Sathish came to meet her and ended up arguing with her.
Police said there was a heated argument between the duo and while the Tambaram-Beach EMU was approaching the first platform, Sathish pushed Sathya. In the impact, she was hit by the EMU and died on the spot. Other commuters tried to catch Sathish, but he managed to escape from the spot.
Personnel from the St Thomas Mount RPF, the Tambaram and Mambalamm railway police, and the St Thomas Mount local police visited the spot and held inquiries. Sathya's body was taken to the Rajiv Gandhi General hospital for post-mortem examination. The police have registered a case and the search is on to nab the accused.
It may be noted that in 2016 Swathi, a techie, was hacked to death, allegedly by Kumar, an engineering graduate, on June 24 while she was waiting to board a train at a platform of Nungambakkam suburban railway station to her work place on the city outskirts, an incident which was caught on CCTV. When police traced him days later and came to arrest him, he had allegedly attempted to kill himself.
