Interiors: Colours that help develop a child’s personality

Experience has taught me that most struggle with the numerous online options. Though all children in the age group of five to nine need cookie cut solutions that resonates 100 per cent with their individuality!  By now they are confident individuals and have specific requirements that can be summed up under three points as below:

Hues in the room  instantly depict the nature of the child. It’s the number one mood generator and is essential for this age group. Colour therapy/feng shui along with other arts and sciences suggest how the usage of the right colours influence the mind and body. Being constantly wired and exposed to the big world, many kids above the age of five, tend to be hyper. Neutral colours for bigger surfaces - for example, whites, greys, beige, or even natural oak etc work amazing when highlighted with accents in bright tones.  Bedroom spaces should be calming (pastels) for a restful night’s sleep, while playrooms could  have bold loud elements from the primary wheel. Moreover kids today are quite out of the pink for girls and blue for boys syndrome. Burnt orange, canary yellows, lime green, Aqua or even teals and corals work beautifully. 

Kids at this milestone require both fun and functional spaces. Fun meaning - activity table, toys storage etc (inspite of them outgrowing many toys - many don’t  let go ) Functional would be the  study and sleep area. Ideally kids at this age group also require a lot of free space. Clutter makes them uncomfortable. Beds with a trundle makes it easy for the moms to organise sleepovers. Floor seating works great for hanging out with friends and  encourages sitting on the floor. The layout of the room becomes most crucial. Needs to be addressed with care based on the kids daily routine. 

This is like the icing and cherry on the cake. I call it the finishing touch ! Window treatment, wall paper, wall art, beddings, knobs, rugs etc determine the character of the child - speaks individuality, chalks out their persona. Adding the fun element with lovely accessories like a roller board shelves, lego mirror frames, butterfly cowls, crown shaped wall hooks etc is the key to make it the best.
