Centre invites applications for appointment of CWMA chairman
Amid a controversy over its independence, the Union Jal Shakti Ministry has sought applications for the appointment of a Chairman of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) created two years ago for settling the water dispute between basin states including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
New Delhi
The CWMA was created on February 16, 2018 under the provisions of the Inter State Water Disputes Act following a Supreme Court judgment which had directed the Centre to frame a scheme under the Act to give effect to the decision of the Tribunal.
Recently, the newly-created Jal Shakti Ministry had issued an order under the Business Rules placing the Authority under the Ministry which stoked a controversy in Tamil Nadu with parties like the DMK accusing the Centre of trying to dilute powers of the Authority. For the last two years, the CWC Chairman functioned as ex-officio Chairman of the Authority. Masood Hussain was the Chairman during this period and he retired and the post has been lying ever since.
Officials from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry cannot be considered for the post because they could be considered as an interested party.
