Edible oil producers demanded to declare net quantity on packages
Under the legal metrology (packaged commodities) Rules, 2011 it is mandatory to declare the net quantity in terms of standard units of weight or measure apart from other declarations on all pre-packaged commodities in the interest of consumers.
CHENNAI: The Centre government on Thursday directed the edible oil manufacturers, packagers and importers to proclaim Net Quantity in volume unaccompanied with temperature on packages as well as stating the same in weight, within six months from the date of the direction issued i.e., up to January 15, 2023, said by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs
Under the legal metrology (packaged commodities) Rules, 2011 it is mandatory to declare the net quantity in terms of standard units of weight or measure apart from other declarations on all pre-packaged commodities in the interest of consumers.
The Department of Consumer Affairs has advised them to emend their packaging by mentioning the net quantity in units of volume without the temperature and the same in weight. If net quantity is mentioned in volume the same should be parallelly mentioned in weight. As factually seeing the weight of edible oil, vanaspati ghee, etc changes with the temperature which would conflict with different temperatures in packaging.
It is observed that industries are proactively mentioning temperature while declaring the net quantity in volume – said the Ministry.
