Chennai braces for heavy rain, GCC issues essential thunderstorm safety guidelines

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has issued essential safety measures that the public should follow, as the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai has issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall.

In light of this, residents are urged to take immediate precautions during thunderstorms and lightning events.

Safety guidelines include:

Do's:

• Seek safe shelter immediately, avoiding metal structures.
• Choose a low-lying area that is not prone to flooding.
• Crouch down with feet together and head down to minimize your profile.
• Be alert if your hair stands on end; it may indicate imminent lightning.

Don'ts:

• Avoid lying flat on the ground, as this increases your risk.
• Stay clear of utility lines, metal fences, trees, and hilltops.
• Do not take shelter under trees, as they can attract lightning.
• Rubber-soled shoes and car tires do not provide protection from lightning.
