"We (Police) will be doing most of the work. The volunteers will be compartmentalized to assist the cops. Some will be used to pass on information about water-logged areas. Some will have to help us during evacuation if the need arises. Some will be assigned for distribution of essential commodities," said JCP P Vijayakumar.
The officer clarified that the volunteers will not have any role until there is heavy rain.
"We are happy that so many volunteers have enrolled. During times like these, it is important we collaborate with the community so that the responsibility of the police is shared, " the joint commissioner said.
Police will also be coordinating with other departments like Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) in providing relief to the public.
