    Cyclone Michaung: 19 persons dead in Chennai and surroundings

    There were incidents of deaths due to tree fall, electrocution and drowning after slipping into the flood water. In several neighborhoods, police and rescue personnel from TNFRS (Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services) used inflatable boats to rescue stranded persons, numbering several hundreds, despite which there were casualities, some of whom are yet to be identified.

    CHENNAI: As on Monday evening, 19 persons were dead in Chennai city police limits and in the surroundings in the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, including three elderly men who drowned in the floodwater in their houses.

    There were incidents of deaths due to tree fall, electrocution and drowning after slipping into the flood water.

    In several neighborhoods, police and rescue personnel from TNFRS (Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services) used inflatable boats to rescue stranded persons, numbering several hundreds, despite which there were casualities, some of whom are yet to be identified.

    Dhamodharan (40) of Old Washermanpet was found dead in rainwater stagnated in his house. Similar was the fate of 64 year old Perumal of Mylapore who was bedridden and drowned in his house on Tuesday.

    A retired Traffic Reserve Inspector, Samikannu, 85 years old was found dead in his house in Madipakkam. He had drowned in the floodwater, police said. His body was retrieved on Tuesday and sent to Government hospital.

    Meanwhile, a traffic head constable, Rukmangathan (48) attached to ICF police station was found dead in rainwater near Aspirin garden. Police suspect him to have slipped and fallen into the stagnated water.

    In Washermanpet, the dead body of a 70 year old man was found on a sidewalk near Vaidyanathan flyover. In Foreshore estate bus depot, police recovered the body of an elderly woman. In Esplanade, Padmanaban (50) of Dindigul who went to buy Milk was electrocuted. Another case of electrocution was reported in Thuraipakkam, wherein Ganesan, a 70 year old man died.

    In Nochikuppam, a 53 year old man, Bharath died after a compound wall collapsed on him at Ellaiamman koil street. A security guard in Government boys school, Choolaimedu, Selvam (50) was found dead in the rain water inside the school campus, police said.

    Mirajul Islam (19) of Assam who stayed at Kotturpuram corporation school relief centre died when he developed epilepsy during the early hours of Tuesday.

    On Tuesday, Police recovered three unidentified bodies at Rajabather street, T Nagar and Vaidhyanathan street, Tondiarpet and Kaiveli junction, Madipakkam.

    Babu (53) of Injambakkam suffered an epileptic attack while at home and died. Meanwhile, Anandbabu (35) of Broadway sustained head injuries after a tree fall on Monday and succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

    Outside Chennai city police limits, two guest workers had died in Kanathur on Monday after a wall collapsed on them.
