    4 youth from Coimbatore killed in ECR accident

    CHENNAI: Four youngsters from Coimbatore died after their car rammed into a lorry in ECR near Kovalam in the wee hours of Wednesday.

    Police identified the deceased as Sulthan (23), Arshaf Mohamed (22), Akhil Mohamed (19) and Mohaned Ashik. All were residents of Puthiamputhur in Coimbatore, who had come to Chennai in their car.

    When they were speeding on ECR near Kovalam, the vehicle rammed into the lorry which had broken down and was parked on the roadside. In the impact, all four suffered grievous injuries and died on the spot, said the police. The car was also extensively damaged.

    Fellow motorists and local residents quickly rushed to the scene to engage in rescue operations.

    Emergency services, including the Pallikaranai Traffic Investigation Division and the Siruseri Fire Station officials, arrived at the spot, and with the help of a crane, they took out the crushed car and tried to rescue the people trapped inside.

    On information, the Pallikaranai traffic investigation team visited the spot and arrested the lorry driver Ranganathan (55) for parking the lorry on ECR without any reflectors or signboards.

    The police have registered a case and are investigating why the friends visited Chennai and where they were staying.

    The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the Chengalpattu District Government General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

    Following the accident, traffic on ECR was thrown out of gear for about two hours in the early morning hours.
