CHENNAI: A student, who received his doctoral degree certificate, handed out a petition to Governor RN Ravi on the dais alleging various irregularities in Bharathiar University.

“At the time of viva, the research scholars are advised by some guides to spend fifty thousand to one lakh rupees. Research scholarsare also compelled by guides to offer money, food and gold after completion of viva -voce examination,” said Dr A Prakash, in his petition to Governor, who presided over and gave away degree certificates to students at the convocation of Bharathiar University on Monday.

Further, he alleged that apart from academic work, the research scholars are forced to work in the house of some guides.

“As the Adi-Dravidar hostels of Bharathiar University are run as public hostels, the research scholars and students face a heavy burden in paying monthly mess fees. The hostels are poorly maintained,” he claimed.

He also flared up the issue of non-conduct of sports day for the last four years in Bharathiar University, despite collecting money for the same from students.

“The Bharathiar University students and non-teaching staff were strictly prohibited from using the grounds. But the ground is rented out for outsiders during weekends,” he alleged, in the petition.

On behalf of the research scholars and students, Prakash urged the Governor to take timely action to resolve these issues.
