With Jayalalithaa as CM, Tamil Nadu women could breathe easy
Atrocities against women is not a topic that has cropped up suddenly. I don’t believe it is on the rise either. Earlier, it was not reported but now people are more aware or they are made aware so that more cases are reported. Earlier, women were too shy to report, they did not come out in the open.

So, even if the number is high, it is because the cases registered are more and the number of incidents on record is more. Now, more and more women work and you can see a lot of women in public places; they go out early and come back late and naturally, there will be more incidents. Women nowadays travel more compared to women of yesteryears. Tamil Nadu is one state that has given respect to women.
It has had a woman Chief Minister and that has helped a lot in keeping crime against women under control. Eve-teasing is not crime per se though there are sections under IPC to deal with that too. Harassment is also checked in workplaces as employers take adequate measures to prevent it. One of the main advantages of having a woman Chief Minister is that she has sent out strong messages to the police that she did not want crime against women.
She has empowered the police to take any measures to deal with it. Prompt action is taken so that miscreants are also scared of the consequences. Molestation is not the main incident against women but chain-snatching is. This is not because they are women but because they wear ornaments.
Compared to Kerala or the North, women have fewer problems here. Eve-teasing is a regular habit in Kerala but that is because it is the Keralites’ habit to pass comment. Even if I go there, they will make a comment or two about my moustache! But in Kerala, women are also bold.
Domestic violence may seem to be on the increase but that is also because earlier, that was not brought to the notice of the police. Now, the parents and friends are more aware and they play a part in the women coming to the fore.
