Pakistan lost three wickets in the post-lunch session on Day 2 of the second Test but a fighting half-century from Mohammad Rizwan ensured that the visitor crossed the 200-run mark.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was unbeaten on 53, having added 39 runs for the ninth wicket with Mohammad Abbas as Pakistan went into tea at 215 for 8.

Stuart Broad bowled one closer to the off stump and had Babar Azam squared up a bit as he went past the outside edge off the second ball in the second session. While Babar was lucky not to nick that, Broad found the outside edge in his next over with a delivery that angled in and left late, forcing Pakistan’s No. 4 to play at it.

This ended a hard-working sixth wicket partnership that had lasted for 20 overs and yielded 38 runs, while it also ended Babar’s streak of fiftyplus scores in first innings as he missed a sixth successive one by three runs.

The tail tried to stick around with Rizwan, who attempted to get Pakistan closer to the 200 mark. Yasir Shah’s stay lasted for 16 deliveries in a 13-run stand before he became Anderson’s third scalp while Shaheen Afridi, who hung around 19 deliveries, was run out for a duck. Rizwan, meanwhile, upped his scoring rate, managing boundaries off Woakes and Curran and did well not to expose Mohammad Abbas much to the bowlers.

Clever retention of strike and scoring at a good rate, Rizwan brought up a fine half-century, much to the frustration of England which wasn’t able to make the most of the second new ball. The session eventually came to an end with the players walking off for bad light.

Brief scores: (At tea): Pakistan (1st innings) 215/8 in 84.3 overs (Abid Ali 60, Babar Azam 47, M Rizwan 53 batting, J Anderson 3/48) vs England
