Lyon roars into CL semi-finals

Pep Guardiola-managed City dominated the opening period, but it was Lyon which broke the deadlock in the one-leg last-eight tie here. In the 24th minute, Toko Ekambi’s shot was stopped by Eric Garcia’s sliding tackle and the loose ball fell to Maxwell Cornet, who fired home from distance.

Premier League side City was down 0-1 at the break, but equalised in the 69th minute. Winger Riyad Mahrez found Raheem Sterling, who assisted Kevin De Bruyne from the byline. However, the French team restored its one-goal advantage 10 minutes later as Dembele put the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Ederson and into the net.

In the 87th minute, the centre-forward sealed the result by pouncing on an Ederson rebound. In between his two game-changing strikes, City’s Sterling missed an open goal from close range and that proved to be costly at the end.

Result: Quarter-finals: Lyon 3 beat Manchester City 1.

Semi-finals line-up: Paris Saint Germain vs RB Leipzig on Tuesday; Bayern Munich vs Lyon on Wednesday.
