Tamil Nadu men’s team in final; women bow out in last-4
The Tamil Nadu men’s team set up a title decider with double defending champion Punjab after defeating Railways 93-70 in the last-four stage of the Senior National Basketball Championship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu women’s team failed to clear the semi-final hurdle as it went down to triple defending champion Railways 88-115. In the Tamil Nadu-Railways men’s contest, the home team was dominant in each of the four quarters and held a sizeable 18-point (51-33) advantage at half-time.
H Muin Bek (26 points) delivered a stellar performance for Tamil Nadu, which is only a step away from ending a four-year title drought. A Aravind (15 points), who led the team on the night, produced a captain’s show while P Jeevanantham (15 points) and Aravind Kumar (14 points) also impressed for Tamil Nadu.
In the other semi-final encounter, Punjab sent Karnataka packing with an 88-75 win. Kanwar G Singh Sandhu (26 points) and skipper Amritpal Singh (22 points) were the chief contributors for Punjab that is eyeing its third successive crown.
In the women’s section, Railways controlled the semi-final match from start to finish as Tamil Nadu struggled to get a foothold. K Sathya racked up as many as 30 points for Tamil Nadu, but her valiant effort went in vain. In another fixture, Telangana edged out Kerala 81-78 with P Priyanka (33 points) being the star performer for the winner.
