City, Liverpool share spoils
Title challengers Manchester City and Liverpool played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium here on Sunday.
MANCHESTER: Following the result, both teams remained at the exact position they began the day at. Table-topper City (74 points) is just one point ahead of the second-placed Liverpool (73 points), with both clubs having played 31 matches each.
In what was touted as a potential title decider, Kevin De Bruyne (5’) and Gabriel Jesus (36’) got on the scoresheet for the host while Diogo Jota (13’) and Sadio Mane (46’) netted for the visitor. After Raheem Sterling missed a glorious chance, De Bruyne opened the scoring with a strike that deflected off Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip. But, City’s joy was short-lived as Jota levelled from close range after Trent Alexander-Arnold set him up.
However, Jesus restored the home team’s one-goal advantage as the Brazilian got on the end of a delicious cross from Joao Cancelo. Behind at the break, Liverpool took just a minute in the second period to make it 2-2. Mane, who beat his marker Kyle Walker, made no mistake after he was set up by a fantastic Mohamed Salah pass.
RESULT: Manchester City 2 (De Bruyne 5, G Jesus 36) drew with Liverpool 2 (D Jota 13, S Mane 46)
