    University of Madras offers new online courses, PG in Big Data Science

    From this academic year, the University of Madras would offer a larger number of courses in the online streams. In addition, the university also is planning to introduce two-year B Ed course after getting approval from the National Council for Teacher Education, and three new postgraduate courses including M Com in Big Data Science.

    A senior faculty from the university said that all the three modes of teaching -- direct classroom lectures, distance education mode and online courses – would be offered from this year. Under this, the students could seamlessly shift from one mode to another for continuing education, he said. Accordingly, choice based credit system would be introduced in distance 

    education.

    The university has brought in necessary regulations to introduce flexibility in core courses, credit transfer facility to promote students’ mobility between institutions in the country as well as in foreign countries, and lateral entry from regular courses to courses in distance education and vice versa. Online courses offered through Centre’s “Swayam” scheme and National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) were already approved by the Academic Council of the university. These courses would be offered from 2018-19 academic year. 

    The University Grant Commission (UGC) has recognised the Human Resources Development Centre of the university as a ‘national resource centre’ to produce and upload online courses in political science and international studies. This programme would also be initiated in this academic year.

    In 2018-19, the University of Madras also proposed to introduce three new postgraduate programme – Executive MBA, MA in Saiva Sidhanta Self Study and M Com in Big Data Science.

    The institution is also proposing to further the paperless working environment by automation of administration with e-governance. Public Finance Management System is to be introduced for all the externally funded programmes in academic and infrastructure area.

    Besides academics, the university is also planning to construct a fitness centre with sports science backup facility at its campus.
