With the State witnessing acute water shortage and the farmers left with crossed fingers due to non-availability of water to undertake kuruvai cultivation, farmers’ associations have been over the days expressing their displeasure about the government’s stand.

They had recently organised a meeting in Tiruvarur and had decided to mark their protest until the State government pressed the Centre to get Tamil Nadu its due share of water from Karnataka as per the orders of apex court.

As scheduled, the farmers converged at at least 45 locations in Tiruvarur district and staged protests. At Kottur, the farmers led by Sivapunniyam stepped into the Mulliyaru river and raised slogans against the State government. Meanwhile, farmers at Mannagudi gathered at Vellaiyaru and set up a funeral pyre representing their life status and raised slogans against the State government. They also demanded the CM to step down if he was not able to solve the very basic need of a resident.
