At the farmers’ grievances redressal meeting organised in the Collectorate, the ryots raised concerns over the shooting price of shallots and onions but the benefits not being reportedly handed down to them by traders. They hence demanded the district administration to recommend the government to fix fair price for the crops.
Suddenly, a section of farmers led by P Ayyakannu, the president of Desiya Thennindiya Nadigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam, came out of the meeting hall and staged a ‘shirtless’ protest over the pricing issue, besides demanding a compensation of Rs 75,000 per acre of shallot crops that were damaged due to the recent heavy downpour.
In the melee, five farmers, including Natchiyammal of Thurvarankurichi, began to agitate by rolling on the ground and raising slogans. Suddenly, the woman farmer fainted. Upon raising an alarm, police personnel there rushed toward her and administered first aid. With her having reportedly fainted from low blood pressure, she was then taken to GH for treatment.
Meanwhile, a section of farmers led by P Viswanathan of the Tamil Nadu Tank and River Ayacutdars Association carried their damaged shallot produce and staged a sit-in in front of the Collectorate.
