PMK leader S Ramadoss on Saturday demanded the State government to construct more check dams across Palar river to increase the groundwater level.
Chennai
“Recently-constructed Vayalur dam, near Kalpakkam Nuclear Power Plant, has resulted in storage of water for close to four kilometres from the dam. This is the first time that water has been stored at such higher levels in Palar river,” said Ramadoss.
He also said that Vayalur dam was sponsored by the management of Kalpakkam Nuclear Power Plant under the Corporate Social Responsibility fund and the dam was constructed at a cost of Rs 32.5 crore. Now, the dam helps in recharging ground water and it can irrigate 4,230 acres of farmlands in 14 villages surrounding the dam.
Similarly, the Palur dam, near Chengalpet, constructed across Palar river in 2014 is helping in recharging ground water levels in the region.
He further said that though Palar river flows for 222 kilometres in the state, there are only a few dams and so the state should allot morefunds to construct at least one dam per every 10 kilometreof the river.
