    Major impetus to solar energy in Tamil Nadu: TEDA chief

    The Tamil Nadu government as a part of the new Solar Energy Policy 2019 has implemented the solar power greenhouses scheme, benefiting around 2.86 lakh homes in the state, said Asia Mariam, MD, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA), Government of Tamil Nadu.

    Speaking at the 9th edition of TAN ENERGY Summit 2019 on the theme “Emerging Energy Scenario in the Current Economic Trend” organised by FICCI, she said TN has given a capital subsidy to the solar village with a 160 MW solar panel.


    The TEDA chief also said that the state has solarised around 10,000 weavers ‘houses in TN referring to the implementation of the solar-producing farmers’ scheme under which an incentive is extended to those farmers promoting solar energy. She also said the state is committed to providing free power to farmers apart from encouraging solar power in the rural areas.


    The top official also spoke about the move on solarisation of all government buildings in the state to reduce the burden of power tariff. Both central and state governments have extended a subsidy to those promoting solar energy as part of the renewable energy adoption drive.


    V Kavitha Dutt, Chairperson, FICCI TNSC; JMD, KCP Ltd, said the country’s per capita energy consumption today is a third of the global average and therefore power sector assumes significance and becomes the key focus area to promote sustained growth.


    “The installed power capacity of the state is roughly 31.30 GW and of that 47% is from Thermal power, followed by 41% of renewable power, 6.96% of hydropower and 4,63% of nuclear power,” she added.
